Getting Things Done

Getting things done won’t always take as long as you think. I’ve learnt that recently.

When I was a student leader we often spent months and months planning a project or event that really could have been held quite sooner. We also dismissed some great ideas because we thought it would take too much time and effort to organise. I now know that in most cases we were wrong. A little time, focus and enthusiasm can go a long way!

Yesterday we heard that a great leadership speaker is coming to our city next week. We were told that if we wish we can organise a dinner for people to come and hear this person speak on a night that is available in their schedule. Three of us had a quick meeting and then within one day we have now booked a venue, organised the meal and program, sent out invitations and have already started receiving RSVP’s back! As well as that, a colleague handed me a leadership book yesterday and said “try and read this book tonight so that we can chat about this topic tomorrow.” I freaked out! Tonight! Tomorrow! I don’t read books very often, and usually it takes me months! But I decided to place some time aside last night to focus on it, and what do you know? I read it, the whole thing!

If you’re a student leader, especially in your last year of school, you might well be thinking that your year is almost over and there is nothing left you can do during your time as a leader. Even if there is only a term left, or even a month left for you, there’s so much you could achieve! Dedicate some time, focus and attitude towards making at least one more significant contribution as a student leader this year.
